Anton Art Center Unveils Fascinating Fiber Arts Exhibition
In a burst of color and creativity, the Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens is set to host the enchanting 22nd Biennial Fiber Arts Exhibition, presented by the Michigan League of Handweavers. From the tactile allure of felt to the intricate dance of looms, this showcase, running from Saturday, September 7, to Monday, October 16, invites visitors to journey through the rich tapestry of fiber arts that spans over 40 years in various galleries, marking a first for the Anton Art Center.
“Crafting with fiber is woven into the very fabric of human history,” mused Stephanie Hazzard, the center’s exhibitions director, capturing the ancient essence of this age-old art form. As visitors stroll through the gallery, they will discover nearly 50 unique pieces from 36 skilled artists, predominantly from Michigan, with a few remarkable contributions from neighboring states like Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and even Ontario. Each piece is not just a creation, but a story told through textures and designs, blending functionality with artistry in a magnificent display.
The exhibition showcases two distinct realms of fiber art: functional works—think cozy scarves, exquisite ponchos, and playful hats—and evocative nonfunctional works that delight the senses purely through aesthetic form. Imagine pieces that range from the dainty dimensions of three inches to stunning expanses of 135 inches, capturing the eye and the imagination alike. These treasures, whether adorning the wall or standing proud on pedestals, come alive through techniques like needle felting, intricate embroidery, and the time-honored traditions of crocheting and knitting. Each creation is a labor of love, handcrafted with care, embodying a unique artistry.
As an exciting highlight, Susan Moran, a noted textile artist and educator at Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies, has been invited to judge this vibrant exhibition. “It’s uplifting to witness the exceptional quality of work submitted,” she shared, emphasizing the spirit of community and craftsmanship flourishing within the realm of fiber art. Many of these stunning pieces resonate with joy, a devotion to the materials, and an exploration of creativity, crafted with mindful intention that invites viewers to pause and appreciate the artistry.
To celebrate the opening, a lively reception will unfold on September 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., where attendees can engage in conversation with Moran and featured artists. In an interactive twist, these artists will be on hand every Saturday, ready to guide guests through the art of loom weaving, inviting the public to add their own touch to a collaborative fiber piece that evolves throughout the exhibition.
